Rockwool is spun from stone and is therefore suitable for putting in compost after plant has finished.  Can be transferred to net cups with plant and will not break down and contaminate reservoirs or block pumps in hydroponic grow systems.  Rockwool gives excellent water to air ratio, when sat in shallow water, supporting a plant's need for both.
